" The Snake of the Zodiac. We're supposed to be strong, loud, egotistical, with souls that can never be beaten down by criticism or any opposition. We're supposed to be, you now, the best. Who knew, huh? I mean, who would've guessed that we were the fragile ones? That we...we never knew what to do. That we were always confused, and only made our decisions based on which option came to the front of our minds first. Who would have ever guessed that our hearts are the ones made of glass?"
The girl had white blonde hair with pink streaks lacing down from her roots, making the woman across from her wonder if they were natural or not; the hair itself was thick and silky smooth, a pleasure to run one's hand through or brush. Her eyes were a blue so pure it was blasphemous. Her skin was like cream, but did not burn easily, as the girl had already said. The blush she had, however, was like a flash-fire disease; it spread through her whole body easily, heating all of her extremities quickly. It faded fast, though, apparently. She was quick to anger, offense, tears, and joy. Her voice was musical, cheerful, and loud. She brushed off criticism like a horse did a pesky fly. It looked as if there was nothing in the world this girl couldn't do.
Well, perhaps there was one thing....
*~HEART OF GLASS~*
A FRUITS BASKET FANFICTION
Chapter One: She’s New
" Thou must confess thine sins! If you do not tell thine sins to the Lord, then how will thou ever get into Heaven? The Pearly Gates will not part for those who have not confessed."
" Father, forgive me, for I have sinned-"
" Louder, child! The Lord hears thy whispers, but conviction comes to those who speak loudest!"
" Father! Forgive me, for I have sinned! I-I-"
The sky fell down.

Shigure finished putting the flourish on the last “a” in Ayame’s name. He was painting new Zodiac figurines, this time ones that were made to look like the real life animals. They could easily fit in a child’s palm and were made out of polished stones he’d purchased from one of Ayame’s many clients. He stepped back. Admiring his work for a moment, he then sat down and unfolded the paper.
Bold on the headlines were the words: CHURCH BURNS
“ Well.” Shigure said. The Dog wasn’t very religious. He had faith in people, but not in gods he couldn’t see. People you could feel and touch and taste. That wasn’t so with gods. They were far away from you, and never there when you needed them.
Still, the headline had caught his attention. Under it, he read:
Yesterday, St. Peter’s Church burned down. Police say it was due to a massive explosion. Just released was the church official’s testimony that an unknown girl was the arsonist, and had caused the fire with powers gifted to her by the devil. The only picture anyone has been able to acquire of the girl is this one.
Shigure’s eyes flickered down to the picture. It was more a profile than an actual portrait. In any case, the girl’s entire body was in shadow, though one could tell she was wearing a skirt from the way the back of it flapped in the wind from the fires of the explosion. Her hair whipped back quite a way, and the Dog observed that it was probably as long as Ayame’s. The thought of his sweet Snake made him wish his cousin were here.
A finger pulled down the front of his paper. Bright blue eyes stared into his dark one’s. “ Hello there.” A soprano voice said.
“ Hello.” Shigure said. He didn’t know who this was, but he was going to be civil until they showed themselves to be a threat.
Lowering his paper, he was met with a stunning sight. A slight blonde girl stood in front of her. Laced in her hair were pink streaks that went to the roots. They looked natural to him; Shigure wasn’t one to argue with someone’s hair color. What with Kyo’s being such a bright orange, Yuki’s being almost purple, and Haru’s being a mix between black and white, he wasn’t about to bring it up with this little number.
Her eyes were a molten blue so intense his first thought was that he was drowning in them. That, of course, was just his poetic side coming out. He decided to try to remember that so he could use it somewhere in his most current novel, which Meii was insisting he was supposed to have finished three days ago.
“ May I ask your name?” he said diplomatically.
A smile lit the girl’s face. “ I’m Kaye Izumi. Most people just call me Kayde.”
“ It’s a great pleasure to meet you, Kayde, but may I ask what you are doing on private property?” Shigure asked, raising one eyebrow. First Tohru, now this girl? Not that he minded sweet young girls invading his house and land.
The petite blonde seemed to sway slightly. “ Well, you see, I don’t really know.” With this, she fell forward onto Shigure’s lap, toppling him over onto the boards of the porch.
“ Oof!” he said, a little too loudly. For a fraction of a second, he stayed in his human form. Then he transformed, a large cloud of purple smoke engulfing the pair.
And that was when Tohru decided to come out. | | | |
